  These filters allow you to place the dark area over the sky, so you can have a properly exposed foreground and a nice rich detailed sky Wow Great info. Hope you take a minute to take a peak at mine.   The problem is that to get a good exposure for the foreground the sky ends up being totally blown out.   Usually when taking landscape photos, the sky is much brighter than the rest of the scene. Algonquin is my home away from home and we try to spend as much time as we can breathing in her beauty. Cokin Graduated Neutral Density Filter s - putting these in front of the lens allows you to darken the entire image. -Good glass makes all the difference in the world to the sharpness of your photo's and the ability to shoot in low light.   Lenses can also get very expensive (the 24-70mm costs about $2000 and the 70-200mm runs around $2600) but a good lens should last a lifetime (whereas a true "pro" changes their camera body roughly every 18 months).
